Tutorial: Restyle your vanity brush

I picked this vanity brush up from a vintage store closing down and on the odd occasion use it to brush out a good set. The pattern on the back of the brush was a bit drab for my liking so I thought I would share with you how to transform it into a brush that you would want to use everyday!

Take your vanity brush and turn it over to the design or mirror on the back, if you have broken the mirror previously then carefully remove the glass. My brush had a thick plastic covering leading me to believe it may have been replaced before, carefully remove this with a firm grip.

Remove the covering and the decorative covering

Peel the covering off and cast this aside keeping the foam.

Select an image/ fabric that you would like to place inside the compartment.

Your plastic covering acts as a template, position this over the image and trace around the edge.

Cut around your trace lined, then layer the foam, image and protective plastic covering.

Manipulate each layer ( one at a time) into the compartment, carefully tucking the edges under the ledge.

Viola! a beautifully ~~pimped~~ restyled vanity brush for everyday use!

I have been having a giggle over the antics of our classic stars in David Bret's biography on Clark Gable "Tormented Star". It would seem that long before Britney Spears and Lindsey Lohan ventured out without their underwear the cheeky Jean Harlow was upsetting studio censors by not wearing panties during shooting bath scenes. Further scandle followed when the director during the filming of Red - Headed Women yelled cut and asked Harlow to remove her jacket, in doing so she revealed to the studio her naked splendor ( Bret, 2007).

Harlow further upset upset studio executives during the filming of The Thin Man when during her studio visits the technicians would whistle and she would respond by flashing her breasts and platinum powder puff ......smirk* no wonder she was hailed as the sex goddess of the 1930's.

Last night we adopted another rescue re-home pup! Her name is Diva, she is 9 months and a Dogue just like Maddy. She's a little apprehensive of hubby but has taken to me like a little shadow ninja ( every time I turn around, there she is!)

The most important thing is that Maddy and Diva seem to have a healthy respect for each other. Maddy is 5 years old so is the boss lady.

A New Vintage

Whoops a day late though I was tied up with the adoption of our newest fur baby Diva, more pics and a post to follow soon.

Our "A New Vintage" dame of this week is Malayka from Auckland. Malayka is the owner of Dashfield Vintage and knows her stuff when it comes to collecting authentic and eye catching vintage.

I adore this dress! In fact I wear this beauty so often that I sometimes feel like it’s unfair to all the other vintage dresses in my wardrobe! I found it a couple of years ago at a big recycled clothing warehouse in Christchurch and it cost me a mere $2.00. I have been selling vintage clothing for over two years now and have been a collector since I was a teenager, so I’ve seen a lot of beautiful old clothing come and go. Every now and then I just come across that perfect piece though and I can’t resist slipping it into my own wardrobe!

At 5’10 I’m rather tall, which means I tend to go more for separates than dresses (especially all the stunning pre 1960s ones) because they just don’t look right on me! Having said that I am lucky to have inherited a lot of my grandmothers amazing wardrobe and we were nearly the identical height and size. I really can’t bring myself to buy cheap, sweat shop clothing from the mall anymore so it looks like I’m going to be a lifetime member of the vintage club!

A new vintage

Today's New Vintage styling lady is the lovely Emily Belle from Wellington. Emily is the make up artist and hair stylist of Belle's Bombshell's creating and styling some of New Zealand's great burlesque starlets and models.

I love my beautiful original vintage cream petticoat that my grandmother gave to me. It holds sentimental value to me because it comes from a family member who wore it and all of the beautiful fashion worn in the 40's and 50's and knows how much love I have for it too. I always team it with a cute full circle skirt and an off the shoulder top or a fabulous swing dress. Heels are a must! I just adore the way it moves and how defined it makes my waist!

Burlesque explosion, the weekend that was

Goodness I have had an epic weekend in Auckland with my best friend in crime and friends. Michelle and I were fortunate to attend Polly Rae's dance class on Saturday morning at a dance studio on Queen street.
The class was upbeat and fun, Polly has a confident relaxed teaching method and isn't afraid to goof off and have fun, which is after all what Burlesque is about! The class had many attendees from around the country so it was nice to meet some of these talented ladies in person as opposed to on face stalk.

That night we got glammed up and attended Polly Rae and her hurly burly girlys at sky city. New Zealand has never seen a burlesque show like this, from naughty nuns, a fire breathing Kitty Bang Bang ( swoon) and Polly with her trademark stunning fans! If this show comes your way make sure you go, its worth every penny!
As a burlesque performer and teacher it was a great way to get fired up and also challenge my ideas as a performer, I adored how classic burlesque was incorporated with remixed modern pop and the costumes where all very cheeky in a literal sense.

Miss Vintage NZ 2012

I'm very excited to be chosen as a contestant in the Miss Vintage NZ this year to be held in April at the Very Vintage day out. This is my first competition I have entered and as part of the application you had to answer a series of questions, submit a video entry and a vintage style photo. Here is my entry:

What does being a pinup mean to you?

"I feel that a being pin up is a celebration of the essence of being a woman. A pinup is a role model to those around them, promoting self confidence, self love and celebrating what makes you unique. To me being a pin up also encompasses the lifestyle, surrounding and incorporating the style of the 30’s, 40’s and 50’s around me through my personal image, music and my home."

For the second installment of "A New Vintage" we have the lovely Violet Wild from Hamilton.

"This is my newest dress! I bought it last week in a second-hand store in St Kelvins Arcade, K Road Auckland. I was immediately drawn to it because of the colours. I specifically needed something to wear for a promotional film shoot for iSupr8, but even if I hadn't had that event in mind I would have bought it anyway. I love the cut of the collar and the tailoring. It fits well across my shoulders.

I have a short, stocky build so I need to be careful about the cut of dresses. It is difficult to find things that lengthen my silhouette, but i think this one is good for me. Because it is a very new addition to my wardrobe it is really an 'ensemble-in-progress'. I had no time to shop for accessories, but ideally I would wear this with go-go style boots and white framed sunglasses - that is kind of more my thing.

I love the way some clothes affect my personality. This dress is very happy!

I'm introducing a new Friday feature to Rosina Lee "A new vintage" , highlighting everyday vintage and rockabilly style in New Zealand and the wearers choose to style it. I pitched my concept to the members of the New Zealand vintage/ rockabilly lifestyle group inviting them to send in images of themselves in their favorite item, describing it and why they love that particular item.

Our very first style diva is the lovely Sabina Vixen from Wellington.

My favourite everyday vintage outfit is based around a beautiful vintage 1940s wiggle dress I found in an op-shop on Cuba Street. It hugs the figure perfectly and, because of the bold colours and style, only needs muted accessories to compliment it. I wear the dress with low black patent court heels, 1940s-50s makeup (red lips, porcelain skin and some very thin liquid cat's eye eyeliner) and a black hair flower or bow. For colder weather I throw my faux-fur collared cape on top.

I love this outfit because it perfectly compliments my figure and accentuates and flatters it without looking tacky. The colours compliment my pale skin and make cherry-red lips pop. The combination is simple, stylish and classic and it really makes me feel confident when I wear it. This is a style I wear every day and since I have been dressing in vintage style I have become far more confident and comfortable with myself; I really feel like the style of clothing in the 1940s and 1950s was made to show women (and their figures!) at their best.

Tell us a little about yourself and your business?

I am a mama of two wee girls Alice Cherry and Pixie Hope, a wife to my darling Ryan and now I am Rosie Squish!!!

Squish has always literally meant SQUISH to me, I can not help but want to squeeze things because they are too damn cute that I want to hug it so tight it pops

!So when brainstorming for a name I kept picturing the things that I wanted to make and that i wanted to squash with love (ie my chubby birdie hair combs) and thought yes this is a 100% appropriate name

My wee squish business started as a creative outlet for me while being at home with the kids and truly did not expect it to start blossoming like it is-

I have always made my own accessories for myself and now I take enjoyment out of making exciting affordable bits and pieces for others!

What/ who motivates and inspires you?

I have SO much inspiration!!!!!!! I find it hard thinking about it all because there is so much - but pretty much ANYTHING a child loves and is attracted to =Rosie Squish love

my girls and my rad husband are a HUGE factor for motivation, want them to be proud of me and I want my girls to be inspired too and i can not wait for them to get big enough to help me out and to teach how to make squishes!

Ryan is awesome his encouragement and support especially in "Rosie Squish" gives me confidence and self esteem because he tells me I am unique and how proud of me he is.

- My friend Jesus is super important to me in my life and in everything I do, its a comforting to have someone to talk to and know He supports me, we have a good lol most days.

My inspiration comes from a number of materials -i love anything and everything that is "PLASTIC FANTASTIC" it makes me feel good!!

Pastel colored anything makes me HAPPY and i want to create things out of CUTE color and pastel is so squish!!

cute animals, and mushrooms are ridiculous they remind me of nursery rhymes so I hunt high and low for wee cuties to make things with!!!

Describe your style?

hmmm now I am not 100% sure how to answer this

I would have to say that I am partly a harajuku wannabe mixed with some Alice, Disney and some punk- i love half and half colored things, my half black half white jeans are my favorite!! Cruella and two face inspire that side of me,

I also have a proper princess dress that I like the wear and listen to Disney sound tracks when i am feeling childish and imaginative .

It depends what mood I am in and what Rosie I am on the day. Sometimes i just love wearing my ol faithful punk band T-shirts and cut off denim shorts with my chucks. My wardrobe has a wide variety of things!

Describe your work place

haha my work space is crazy, love it though. Secretly I walk by it and stop and admire it from time to time its awesome

ok just so you know i have limited myself to 8 people ! these are the most inspiring people to me and I have a lot of admiration for them

Super spoilt!

I mentioned previously that hubby has been overseas for work, imagine my surprise and delight when he unpacked these goodies- Dita Von Teese Femme Totale! He managed to pick these up in Austria and with New Zealand stores unable to give a date or even knowing about the perfume I am beyond happy.

I'm a fan of heavier scents saving my floral scents for casual summer days, so if you like rose/ peony scents with woody( incense) undertones then you will enjoy this. I also found that putting the body lotion on my wrists and neck in the morning provides enough of a light scent for the day.

Initially on application the scent is strong but after 20 mins of settling on my skin it is not overbearing or head ache inducing.

The icing on the cake was he also brought home a bottle for my best friend and it was worth every minute of watching her reaction when opening her parcel for christmas.

Happy Sparkly New Year ! to all of you who celebrate new years at this time! I have noted that many blogger's have done a end of year round up, I felt unsure about how I wanted to go about this as my end of year was particularly challenging due to the miscarriage of our first child while hubby was away so I wrote a very personal letter to the universe in my 365 journal.
Instead I want to say a big thank you to those who supported us during this time, also for all the wonderful opportunity's that arose this year offering areas of growth and challenge. This year a performed in many shows, meet many fabulous people ,learned to live in the moment, completed my 3 years of teaching study ( hurrah!) and ran the first many of the vintage and rockabilly market in Hamilton. There are many other small accomplishments but they are better left unsaid as they are appreciated by a group of very special people.
Next year I look forward to accepting new and exciting challenges and focusing further on what I can offer to myself and others around me.

Late last year the inaugrual kiwi Miss Cheesecake Pinup competition was held on facebook and the winners were decided in January by the NZ public via text voting.
This beautiful, retro/vintage styled, limited edition 2012 calendar has been produced as a result of the competition and features NZ's 12 favourite Miss Cheesecake Pinup girls and 12 fantastic recipes.
We are proudly supporting KidsCan, a wonderful charity that helps less fortunate children in New Zealand. Their mission is to meet the physical and nutritional needs of disadvantaged New Zealand children to assist them in reaching their full potential in life. At least $5 from each calendar is donated to KidsCan -the more calendars we sell, the more we can give to charity!

Interview with Simon Crowfoot, bass player with Torment, The Cultic Heads, Demented and Johnny Stash

Decembers final interview is with the ever dapper Simon Crowfoot, the lovel partner of my close friend Michelle.

When did you start listening Rockabilly, Psychobilly and at which age and why did you decide to play double bass?

I started to listen to Rockabilly in 1980 when I first saw the Stray Cats on their second tour in Bristol and fell in love with that music and style, Psychobilly came a few years later about 1983/4 and I liked the harder edge of the music and I was about 22 when I first decided to want to play double bass after seeing Lee Rocker from the Stray Cats.

Who were the CULTIC HEADS and why didn't the band go beyond recording a demo tape?

The CULTIC HEADS were the Psychobilly band that developed from a rockabilly band called THE KERNALS that I was in that came from Gloucester in the UK. The band didn't go beyond a demo tape of 7 songs when I was playing for them. But did try to get a recording deal with Nervous Records, but unfortunately didn’t get accepted. That happened after I left to go and play for TORMENT.

When and how did you get involved with DEMENTED ARE GO and how frequently did you fill in for double bass duties?

I got involved with DEMENTED ARE GO through a friend called Colin Evans who was the singer of another band I was in called 'THE SWAMP TOADS' and knew Dick Thomas the guitarist with Demented at that time. That would have been about 1985/6. I played with DEMENTED ARE GO for about a year. Playing when they needed me to. Ray Thompson was the regular bass player at that time as he was another Cardiff local resident which made things easier for the rest of the band.

How did you become a ' special guest ' on In Sickness & In Health and is there a particular reason why you slapped the bass strings on Rubber Love?

Hahaha. That's a good question Patrick. There is a good unknown story here my friend. The album credits me as playing on Rubber Love but the sleeve notes are wrong... (Probably due to too many Purple Hazes LOL) I am actually playing on the track called Frenzied Beat. I got to be on that album due to me asking to play a song on their forthcoming album 'In Sickness And In Health'.

Had you been in any bands others than DEMENTED ARE GO and the CULTIC HEADS before you eventually joined TORMENT?

Yes, I have been in a Rockabilly band called THE KERNALS that turned into THE CULTIC HEADS. A band called THE SWAMP TOADS that was a mix of Rockabilly and Psychobilly. And a Hillbilly band Called 'JED AND THE CLAMPITS' with Dick the guitarist from Demented and the singer from 'The Swamp Toads' and a couple of other musicians too. That band would have been around the time of me just starting to play with Demented.

Since when did you know Simon Brand, do you remember the first meeting and how did you become the final part of the classic TORMENT line-up?

I first met Simon Brand in about 1986 when he called me up and asked me if I wanted to join Torment. I don't remember the very first meeting with him actually. But a good friend of mine Tony Biggs was the previous bass player (he is now the bass player for The Rimshots with John Lewis and also for Bill Fadden and The Rhythm Busters) for them but, it wasn't his thing really as he is more of a good rockin' sort of a guy so I think he left the band. So, I was asked and as they say 'The Rest Is History'.

The band was already about to making a name for itself when you were drafted in. As far as I know the album deal was already signed, shows including some Klub Foot action were booked. So how difficult was it to get familiar with the set within a few weeks and any memories left about the 'Psyclops Carnival' sessions?

Yes that's right. I had 2 weeks to learn all the songs on that first album before the recording session that had already been booked. I just went home and practiced and practiced them to get familiar with the songs for the imminent recording at Diamond studios. My memories of that session were that it was stinking hot in there during the summer and we were sweating our pants off during the recording.

In 1987 TORMENT not only did record two more classics of the genre ' Mystery Men' 12'' EP and Three's A Crowd LP but also toured the continent. How was it like to spread the word over Europe and which are your favourite tracks on the 1987 releases?

We always loved to play abroad as it was great to see some different sights and play to different and bigger crowds. It was always like being on holiday for us actually. My favourite songs from these two issues are Conscription Plan from the Mystery Men EP and Three’s a Crowd, the title track from the Three's A Crowd album.

You were not only playing the doghouse with TORMENT, but you also contributed a lot on the song-writing with many songs co-credited to Simon Brand and to yourself. How easy or difficult was it to work with Simon Brand on that part of the music and how did you usually get the songs together?

Apart from playing double bass, the song writing duties went pretty well between the two of us actually.

Sometimes I would write the music and he would contribute the words or help out, and vice versa. I can’t remember that ever being a big issue between us. We would have an idea for a song and just keep working on it and nutting it out until we had something that we were proud of to put out there and play to our audience.

Round The World was released in 1989. One of my favourite songs of the album is Catch 22, a song that was written by yourself. What's the song all about and was their a special inspiration to write it?

Thanks for that Patrick. Catch 22 was written about my mum actually as she was going through that horrible thing of divorce from my dad in 1987 and so for a year or two had a crap time dealing with all that emotional stuff. So I wrote the song about her and her situation and that was my inspiration.

The album was quite different from the previous output. The sleeve includes pictures, showing you guys with classic quiffs rather than big flat-tops and shaved hair. The sunglasses were missing too and the production sounded a little bit more polished than on earlier releases. So how did that all happen and how do you think about the album in retrospect?

I think that it was definitely a new and different concept for TORMENT on that album, musically and with our image. I don't know if it was a big success but there were good songs on that album. I remember thinking at the time that it was a bit strange going for that electronic drum sound when, for me it should have been a hard hitting normal drum kit sound. I suppose it has its strong points on the album in places. The Psychobillies will tell you if that album was a success or not. I wasn't too overly happy with the overall result.

Some time after the Hypnosis album you left TORMENT for love. Do you remember the last gig and have you ever had regrets leaving the band?

After the Hypnosis album I was definitely in love and wanted to move to Amsterdam to be with my girl. When I mentioned that was my intention I was immediately kicked out of the band even though I said I would still play gigs with them. So leaving/kicked out whatever or however you see it .I don’t have any regrets as a lot of negative things were said about me at that time. So, I didn't have any regrets about not being in TORMENT. The last gig for me was in Zurich in Switzerland and a blinder of a gig actually.

As far as I know you lived in Amsterdam at that time. Did stay in touch with Kevin Haynes and Simon Brand and how did you make a living over there?

I was living in Amsterdam after I was not in TORMENT anymore making my living as an Engineer and making Neon signs too believe it or not. All that work was through a contract agency. I had no more contact from Simon or Kev except after a year they asked me to do another tour but I declined their offer.

When and how did you hear that Simon Brand committed suicide ? How did you feel when you got the news and do you think that was unavoidable?

I heard that Simon Brand committed suicide when I was living in Amsterdam. I felt sorry that he had done such a terrible thing. As to if I think it was unavoidable. I didn't know that he was so far down the track of mental illness to ever do such a terminal thing. I had no idea that he was ever in a suicidal state of mind.

You finally emigrated to New Zealand. How about that and how much do you enjoy life over there ?

I emigrated to New Zealand in 1994 and it has the best decision of my life. Life is great here beautiful scenery all around me. I have a home in the country with beautiful views. My partner and I have a Swing Dance school teaching students how to dance the Lindy Hop. The dance for the hepcats from the 1940's. I own a 1940 Indian Scout motorcycle with suicide shift gear change.
I have two bands a Rockabilly band called JOHNNY STASH and a Swing/Jazz band called BLUE TUXEDO playing songs from the 1940's and 50's great fun and we are just starting to make a name for ourselves here. With JOHNNY STASH we don't play as often as we used to as the BLUE TUXEDO thing is our focus at the moment. But, with The Stash we have been playing at Hot Rod events and have played for 4 years running at New Zealand’s biggest Rockin' thing ” The Beach Hop” at Whangamata. Over 1200 cool American cars and hotrods last year and growing bigger every year.

After unearthing the long-lost Klub Foot tapes, Alan Wilson has started to release these complete sets ( or at least what was recorded on tape ). The third release of this series will be the TORMENT gig from the 30th of August 1986. So do you remember that particular night and any stories to tell from that show ?

I do remember that night of the Klub Foot recording. I remember that we were so proud to be considered for a live recording and practiced hard for that gig. We were all a bit nervous but it went pretty well I think. It was a tighter running schedule than any other Klub Foot gigs which we had previously played. I don't actually remember any specific stories from that night actually Patrick only that we made the recording and I do remember that I split my fingers open from playing hard that night.

As you mentioned earlier you're still involved in Rockabilly music and you're slapping the bass with JOHNNY STASH. I got hold of your debut album Rum, Rockabilly & the Stash ( THANKS JOHN, you know where you are !!! ). Anyway please introduce the band and are you pleased with the release?

JOHNNY STASH my Rockabilly band has members of an International flavour. I, Simon Crowfoot, well, as you know I am from Bristol in the UK and playing slap bass for the band. The drummer is an American guy called Eric Otoka who hails from Portland, Oregon and lastly but not least the guitarist is called Johnny Maydon and is from Dunedin way down South in New Zealand on the east coast of the South Island from a city called Dunedin.

The CD called 'Rum, Rockabilly And The Stash' that we recorded a year or so ago has a lot of different styles on it from Rockabilly, Rock 'n' Roll to Ska, Country, Swing, R&B, Rock, Rock Steady. I am pretty pleased with it although it is not strictly a Rockin' CD.A bit for everyone I would say. Although I like the Rockabilly songs the most. Goes without saying really doesn't it.

Caring for your vintage gloves

My posts on glove etiquette from over a year ago seem to be very popular with myself still answering regular questions. I thought as a follow up that I would highlight some accessories that are available to keep your gloves in good condition.

Vintage glove clips: there are attached to your hand bag and your gloves are attached while you are not wearing them. Available in vintage stores online, Ebay and trademe, or if your feeling crafty you could design your own.

Vintage vanity clip holders, generally 3 or four high with delicate hand clips to hold your pairs of gloves

I have yet to personally come across one so my gloves are stored in pretty lingerie boxes with tissue and some vintage hat boxes.

You can read a wonderful article here on the Queens of Vintage site explaining how to wash your gloves.

When washing my gloves I fill a bowl with luke warm water and add a squirt of delicate wash liquid ( silk wash) and give the gloves a gentle swish in the water before lying them flat on a towel to dry. If you do this often this will break down the build up of grime on the fingers.

Recently I have been on the lookout for a dress suitable to wear to the numerous Christmas functions that have now began, so when the Shabby Apple team contacted me asking if I would like to review one of their vintage inspired dresses I excitedly jumped at the chance. After much oohing and aahing over their selection I selected the charcoal Moon River vintage inspired dress in for its classic silhouette and structured ruffled peplum - very 1940's. Another draw card was that I was sure no-one would be wearing the same dress when I was out and about.

When the dress arrived ( promptly for international post) I thought I would wear it out to Bombshell Burlesques starlets graduating review ( soo proud of them)

I cinched the dress with a red waist belt, added a necklace and some seamed stockings. I have never worn anything ruffly before preferring a clean silhouette but I was pleasantly surprised with the effect.

The dress overall was very comfortable and easy to move in due to its stretch , the top half is a little big but not overly noticeable - overall gauging the students responses they were very impressed with the dress and I'm looking forward to styling it for the fashion in the field at the races.

Life's in full swing at moment! I have my head down finishing the final five weeks of my studies and I'm really looking forward to enjoying Christmas off, though I'm as equally excited to be a qualified teacher soon.

Snuggled up against the cold, watching fireworks last weekend,
oh and I'm a red head now!

Apart from the studies, my partner in crime Ms Tittle Tattle and I are gearing up to perform in a Christmas season burlesque show for a couple of weeks - the creative powers behind it are blowing our minds with their idea's and we feel very spoilt with all the effects we have been offered.

I also have my Atomic Market held on the 19th, I have enjoyed organising vendors, workshops etc though the nerves are starting to tingle now we are ten days out!

All this has meant I have to spend more time on looking after myself so I don't fall into the trap of crashing and burning with every little bug that passes my ways so I have been steering clear of processed food and making a focused effort to eat more fresh. hopefully I will reap the rewards soon!

Hurly burly burlesque brought a variety of performances from cabaret, trapeze, classic tease, tap, comedy and classic Charleston with a headlining act from our current Miss Burlesque NZ " Bettsy Rose Lee" who is also from Glamilton! Had a thoroughly good time with lots of backstage antics, wine, giggles and a few costume malfunctions - all good fun, you learn to laugh at these.

A great mid century drawer for only $14 nz off trade me which now houses all of our Cd's and DVDs. I was super thrilled with this little bargain and it was local as well. The above framed poster was done by tattoo artist Simon Morse for the New Zealand band Odessa - it was the band my hubby and I went to see on our first date.

Hubby and I are fans of the artist Banksy so we added this print to our collection.

I went to see In the Mood ( 40's revue) on Sunday night, with some of friends and I took my dad along for fathers day.

The show was nothing short of AMAZING!, amazing big band, amazing dancing, amazing singing, amazing costumes.....amazing..well you get the idea.

The lovely Michelle ( on the left) entertained the waiting crowd with her partner swing dancing, and of course we dressed for the occasion!

I wore the 1940's gabardine dress that I purchased in May, 40's hat ( with additional red feathers) and gloves given to me by my grandmother.

This is something I have had on my list to do for a few years so I was very excited when Briar of Briar Elizabeth Photography put a model call out and I was accepted.! Started doing Aotea Square markets in 2007 with screen printed deconstructed op shop clothing

As I was studying fabric design at the time so totally took advantage of all the equipment on offer

It was so much fun!
Then in 2008 I moved over to Sydney and found myself in between jobs so I designed a range of bags and found a stockist in the more alternative suburb called Newtown.

Since then I have used my design skills and love for making and creating to get by when I have found myself with out work its great skill to have and now I think I can make a living out of doing wot I love to do …

Thats exactly what artist Heather - Holyoak has done with her set of traditional princess range. Hell if they had looked like this when I watched them as a child, I would of paid more attention!

The humble wedge

Paris is leading the trend for Summer 2011 with the announcement the wedge is in, as a fun and flirty alternative to the high heel. For those ladies into the vintage style or for that matter fashion , we know this is not the first time the wedge makes an appearance as fashion recycles and draws inspiration from previous decades.

The characteristics of the wedge is thick and one piece with the sole, whilst high heeled shoes have a separate heel attached.

The wedge made its first appearance in 1935 designed by Italian Salvatore Ferragamo. He first introduced the orthopedic wedge closely followed by a fashion wedge in 1936, choosing to work with cork and wood due to the leather and rubber shortage.

The wedge became a popular choice in the 1940's due leather and rubber being needed for the war effort. They were also easier to walk in and added additional height to the wearer.

In the 1970's the wedge became popular again with unisex appeal, they were designed in loud, clashing colours that drew the observers eye in.

R.I.P Nancy Wake

One of my all time female war time hero's past away on the 7th of August , age 98.

Nancy Wake was born in Wellington, New Zealand, moved to Australia at a young age before becoming a nurse, then a journalist based in Paris, France.

Her introduction to the resistance began with transporting messages and hiding allied servicemen in her apartment to leading resistance troops, liaising bombing, parachute pickups and executing a spy or two.

She was that elusive the Gestapo named her the white mouse, missing her by mere minutes, but not before they tortured and killed her french husband.

I know I was intrigued by this inspirational women on watching a special doco on her for Anzac day, followed by Peter Fitzsimons book, Nancy Wake. I recommend giving it a read.

Keeping it simple

You will have noticed that I am currently adjusting the look and style of my blog, this blog is consistantly evolving much like ourselves and I am in a period of transition where I am floating between while trying to find balance by simplify the enviornment around me. Currently I'm drawing on lightness and calm, freshness and simplicity, this may be due to the welcome site of cherry blossums and lighter evenings or the feel of change in the air. Either way I'm sure the wind will blow me where I need to go.

I have been clearing clutter from the house and letting go of pieces that I feel no longer define me or that I do not want to define me, and to be honest its a nice feeling not to have a items in the house that have me drawing on memories that only make me linger and not look ahead.

Do you go through periods of change? decluttering your home or maybe your closet? Removing those items that do not bring pure delight or joy in your day, take the small step and remove one item today that you do not feel drawn too or even declutter your junk draw ( we all have one), its a step towards creating the world and person you want to become.

I got a perm!I had been toying with the idea for over a year now and I had horrors of this, but fortunately I gained thicker and, less oily wavy hair. It now holds a set longer and is easier to do vintage styling.

We had our July Dr Sketchy, I was off the stage this time so picked up my pencils and had a little sketch.

We had a bevy of entertainers from the local Roller derby to Miss Burlesque NZ 2011 Miss Bettsy Rose Lee.

I was also extremely proud of my friend Little Miss Broadway

who debuted on the stage with an amazing tambourine routine

Mid winter retro market fair

Saturday I had the pleasure of attending Hamiltons first Mid winter Retro fair held at St Albuns church in Chartwell. There was a great assortment of sellers ranging from home wares to clothing all presented in variety of manners, the sellers where pleasant and the hall was packed for the entire hour I was there.

What stuck out for me was the enthusiasm of organiser Natalie and her passion for vintage home wares etc, the pricing was reflective of this and it was a nice change to browse pieces that were not over priced and inflated purely because its vintage. Its this passion the ignites interest from general public who want to source something different for their homes and move away from the generic mass produced pieces of today.

These were only $10! alas not in my size

What I cam home with:

Two rimu mid century style side tables

A bread bin, ironically not storing bread but tea and coffee etc

Some great vintage decals, and not photographed: a Soo obviously Rex handbag

All of these totaled $45!, needless to say I was chuffed with what I had purchased and I will definitely be marking the next retro fair on my calender.

Continuing on with the New Zealand Vintage/ Rockabilly scene interview series, Auckland based Malayka of Dashfield vintage takes the time to talk to us about her love of vintage, good coffee and her family

RL: Tell us a little about yourself and how you started Dashfield vintage?

Well you might say that I’m a citizen of the world! I’m half German, half African (and who knows what else), I was born in Germany but grew up in New Zealand. I now live with my guy in a little cottage in the countryside looking out to sea. I am actually a qualified translator and freelance writer but my true passion has always been vintage. A sure way to my heart is through delicious food, strong coffee and good single malt whiskey!

Dashfield Vintage really evolved out of necessity! I’m a major collector and hoarder so after a 6 week road trip through the South Island one summer I returned home with a van filled to the brim with op shop treasures. I had to come up with a solution for managing my obsession quickly or risk drowning in a sea of my collections. So I began selling at weekend markets and through Trade Me, and discovered that it was not only a great excuse for me to keep sourcing goodies but it was also a lot of fun! The online store came about as a way to reach a larger customer base and be able to expand some more. Next on the agenda is creating a hiring service for those extra special pieces, and eventually having an actual store.

RL:• How do you go about sourcing fabulous vintage and what catches your eye?

All the treasures at Dashfield Vintage have been sourced by yours truly. They come from the smallest towns in the South Island to the quirkiest little places in Berlin and Paris! I hit the secondhand shops, garage sales and flea markets almost everywhere I go. The two most important factors for me are that garments are of great quality and have a unique factor to them. I am always particularly drawn to well tailored pieces.

RL: What fads have you seen in the vintage market, are there any current dominant fads here in New Zealand?

People do seem to stick to what is in fashion at the moment so I try to always stock a good range when I am selling at the markets. At the moment the 1970s are still very popular so things like maxi dresses, wide brimmed hats, pussycat bow blouses and natural leather handbags are doing very well. You can never really be sure what somebody is on the hunt for though so it pays to have a little bit of everything. Dresses from the 1960s and earlier are always admired but seldom bought which I think is a shame because they are always my favourites!

RL: What do you think attracts people to vintage?

I honestly think that people are drawn to vintage because they get sick of the poor quality, cookie cutter trends that are in chain stores these days. Buying vintage means that you get a quality, unique piece of clothing at a very affordable price. I think the other factor that attracts people is the hunt! Searching for that special piece and finding is just the best feeling in the world!

RL: Describe you style?

My style is quite mixed up. I absolutely adore 1940s and 1950s style high waisted skirts and trousers teamed with cute feminine blouses and fitted blazers (one of my favourite designers is Lena Hoshcek so I am very inspired by her style). On the other hand in summer I am a huge fan of crazy batik prints and dresses from the 1960s and 1970s. I used to restrict myself to the rockabilly/ pin up looks but have since realized that there are so many great styles from through out the decades and it’s alright to mix it up sometimes.

RL: What is your favorite item/s? (This could be clothing, furniture, a pet?)

I get very attached to my things so picking favourites is always difficult! I inherited some amazing Pucci, Dior, Chloe dresses from my grandmother which I am head over heels in love with.

RL: Where are your favorite places to hangout?

These days I actually love nothing more than to sit at home in front of a roaring fire with my guy, our furry family (a dog and two kitties), a glass of wine and an episode of True Blood! But when I do go out it is usually for special events, gigs or burlesque shows.

Towards the end of April I had the privilage to perform in Miss La Vida in Las Vegas fundraiser show. Miss La Vida was the first New Zealander chosen to represent us at the Burlesque Hall of Fame this year in the best debut section and she did us proud with her fantastic big buts routine. You can must see it! here.

Before I entered the exciting world of burlesque I frequently attended Miss La Vida's shows in Auckland and came away inspired and knowing that I wanted to do that! My overall goal was to perform in a show that she had produced so I was thrilled to participate in this.

The show was held at Las Vegas Club on K'Rd , Auckland and was one of the oldest venues in NZ that hosted burlesque performers back in the day.

Obsessions with renovations

We have officially owned our home for a year now!and though we haven't renovated as much as we has planned things are still ticking along slowly. I currently have a mild obsession with finding the perfect mid-century side board/ furniture and house plants!. As random as a house plant obsession sounds I like the character and touch of nature they bring inside.

To add fuel to my obsession I have been ~~endlessly~~ casually trawling inspirational sites for new ideas and thought I would share a few. I'm looking forward to sharing the small changes we have made to our kitchen and should be able to post some pics next week!

Over the last month and a half I have had the privilege to be choreographing for a play loosely based on the story of Freda Stark called Unbearable Things. Freda Stark was a burlesque dancer in New Zealand ( 1935) who earned the title of Fever of the fleet for entertaining the American troops stationed in Auckland. Freda had a lover Thelma who overdosed on prescription drugs, her husband was later charged with her murder. It is also said the term " Stark Naked" is in honour of Freda's famous gold painted nude dance. I have had been working with a talented young actress who is about to debut her first burlesque performances, one of which is a traditional fan dance. I'm soo very proud of her and how far she has come.

One of my latest purchases was this limited edition Mills and Boon ( I didn't realise that until I got home, I swear!) reproduction of 50's romances. I was drawn into the book section by the pulp art covers, which I have a soft spot for. They are full of detectives, deadly dames and nasty villains and get as scandalous as baring their legs or a kiss on the cheek. For those pulp art loving dames in New Zealand, I picked this boxed set up for $10 at the Warehouse.

The blogging world seems to have slowed down recently with comments dying down and bloggers not posting as frequently, this could be due summer arriving in the northern hemisphere and everyone being outdoors soaking up the warmth. Personally its slowing down for me as I feel the only thing I can post about revolves around photos of what I'm up too( with a drained camera I'm out of action), or finding new content to post that has not been recycled around the vintage network over and over. This is not to say I do not enjoy/appreciate the time and effort put into the post and the knowledge shared, but I find myself glazing over numerous victory roll tutorials or how to put on red lipstick.

So I put it to you the readers; what do you want to see more of?, less off?, I would like to say that comments are not important to me but that would be lying as I enjoy the conversations and friendships began and they frequently lead to inspiration to new posts and content..

I had the privilege of being invited to perform at Venus Starrs Carousel Cabaret in Wellington, it was an amazing experience and such a great opportunity to work with seasoned professionals who certainly know how to run and put on a great show! I would also add that the audience was FANtastic!, not only was it a sold out show but they whoop and whistle and support every performer on the stage! We couldn't perform without you xxx You can see a video of my performance here.

Saturday I headed to over to my friends house to celebrate the opening of their in house tiki bar! it looks amazing with lots of attention detail including bamboo furniture, leis, tropical cocktails, tropical themed wallpaper and of course tiki paraphernalia everywhere.....needless to say there was alot of spiced rum, coconut and tropical themed cocktails consumed.

I had hoped to share some more images but alas the camera has sucked its battery's dry and I need to head out to grab some more, then I can share with you some new purchases and discovery's.

We had a class outing this week and these are some of the results of what we observed, apart from that I have been stuck at home with conjunctivitis ( perks of the job) which has meant catching up on studies, housework and other domestic duties.

My beloved nan came for dinner and brought a tantalising assortment of goodies with her that I will share doing the week. My nan is AMAZING! she is out there doing what she loves most and can be seen out dancing a different genre each night...even Zumba!. She is also my biggest fan when it comes to burlesque and attends all my performances when I'm in Wellington.

A little while ago you may remember the interview I did with Brigette of Brigette Boop couture, today I have the pleasure of introducing Missy of Miss Melicious!

Tell us a little about yourself and your business?

I’m a busy Mama of 3 girls, a wife, a daughter and a Wonder Woman so I have been told; Although Lynda Carters life would have been a lot different from mine I would imagine.

Miss Melicious is a business that started out as Cupcakes, and is growing to Cakes, Cookies, Whoopee pies, Styling, Events and a whole lot more… Never underestimate the power of Miss Melicious and all that we can do for you and your creative and tasty treat needs.

What did you do before?

I started in Fashion retail when I was 13 years old and basically floated through various positions for about 10 years loving the creative side but hating the corporate side of the jobs. I have also been volunteering since I was 9 years old, working on various events.

What motivates and inspires you?

My girls are my main motivation; I want to be able to show them that you can do things the unconventional way and still be successful and happy. As for Inspiration, well I have so many things that get my brain churning, but a lot of Miss Melicious inspiration comes from the fabulous decades of the 50’s and the 80’s.

Any advice for anyone wanting to start their own business

Be prepared for really long nights, little sleep and lots of fun! It’s so awesome to be able to do what you love doing every day, you just have to really believe in your product and make a point of difference

Describe you style?

I have always found it hard to pin point my style as it changes all the time, but as Coco Chanel once said “In order to be irreplaceable one must always be different”, I love 50’s lines and feminine colours, yet I live in black and like to feel comfortable. I love black and white stripes and polka dots, leopard prints and cameos. I am a bit of a chameleon… Suburban Mama one day and a fashionista the next. Its fun and I would never change it.

What is your favorite item? (This could be clothing, furniture, a pet?)

My Wedding Dress… it’s fabulous and designed by me and made by my amazing mama. It has the BIGGEST black and white striped bow on the back.

Where are your favorite places to hangout?

I am a real home body, I love being at home with family and friends. “There’s no place like home”. – Judy Garland, Wizard of oz.

When we purchased our home ( nearly a year ago) we had planned to remove the centre upper cupboards to create an open plan flow from the kitchen into our living area.

I thought I would share my recent purchase from Trade Me.

A grey gabardine 40's dress with shoulder pads and pleated skirt. It buttons up the front, has fake pockets and 3/4 sleeves. ( Sellers description). Hopefully it is everything that it is described, it will be perfect for the cold winter nights that we are now experiencing here in NZ.

Well maybe just pleased!, whilst typing the title I wondered where did this phrase come from?

Basically it derives from the Punch and Judy puppet shows originating in 16th century Italy. Punch goes on a rampage killing his baby, wife and many other victims including death whilst being overly ecstatic with his actions " Pleased as punch!". No surprise that popularity declined in the late 20th century as it society did not want to find entertainment in a "wife beating serial killer". Further reading here.

I got a little side tracked with the title, so I'm pleased as I discovered a great link explaining how to remove lenses out of vintage frames. Two years ago you may remember I found these great glasses at an op shop for $2!

They had prescription lenses in them so I took them to the local optometrist who was reluctant to try removing them as he didn't want to break them. After that I resigned to the fact that they would be purely ornamental and they have been on display since. Tonight I came across Fifties Frames which described step by step on how to remove the lenses from the frames with hot water and it worked!

This is my late at night, no make up happy face!!....Yes I'm in my dressing gown! I'm looking forward to wearing these tomorrow and hopefully finding some more in the local op shops.

It’s a gorgeous day today and I’m trying to make the best of it with a pounding head cold. No sympathy need though, it a reminder that when I am busy that I need to look after myself and not rely on the quick grab junk food readily available. So I’m dedicating this week to refueling and looking after myself with fresh food and sleep.

I had an intense four day weekend involving shows, photo shoots and teaching workshops which reminded me of all the wonderful people I have met during my involvement with burlesque. Its lovely to meet seasoned performers who are down to earth and are supportive of those in the scene (and my many questions), as well as meeting new, excited performers to be who are interested in the full context of burlesque. I commend them for taking the first step into a class (I can relate to how nerve racking this is) and exploring their alter egos.

On Thursday my lovely partner in crime Ms Tittle Tattle and I jumped on an airplane down to Wellington to shoot the poster for Carousel Cabaret. This is an amazing monthly show produced by circus burlesque performer Venus Starr, together with AJ photography they produce amazing posters to showcase the upcoming shows. Our talented frind Amy took some behind the scenes pics to share and some sneaky peek shots have also been released. I cannot wait to see how the poster looks when it is released.

I have been spending my Monday in sewing and having a " Fringe" marathon. Imagine my delight when episode " Brown betty' came on set in a 1940's film noir style. Olivia plays a strong female private detective with looks that could of been inspired by Katherine Hepburn, tailored high waisted pants, shirts and masculine trench coats.

There are some great scenes through out ( I was unable to locate some good shots online), including a bar and a hospital all styled in 1940s apart from touches of modern technology such as cell phones and laptops etc. I'm sure this available online, for those of you in NZ this available on TVNZ on demand.

My skin is becoming terribly dry. Is there anything I can do to help it without wearing night cream - I like to wash my face just before going to bed.

Wear your nourishing cream while you are in your bath. The steamy atmosphere will help your skin to absorb the cream and you can wash your face afterwards if you wish - using a mild soap. It will also help if you clean your face with a cleansing milk instead of washing it during the day, reserving soap-and-water for bedtime only.

Its the way the perfume is distributed that matters. Touch the lobes of your ears with a spot of scent, rub another drop lightly on your fingertips and spray a little on to your hair. For an extra touch of fragrance, tuck little balls of cotton-wool sprayed with your perfume in your dressing-table drawers, among your undies, blouses and handkerchiefs. You could also attach one of these perfumed trifles on each of your dress hangers too.

B is for Burlesque

This past fortnight has been a steady string of coming and goings of assignments and social engagements. I have began teaching one on one burlesque classes which I thoroughly enjoy!. Caburlesque held a show here in Hamilton where I was fortunate to perform two new acts and meet the lovely Danica Lee ( Miss Burlesque Sydney), while two of our students also had their debut and brought the house down with their performance to Take it all.

This weekend also saw the crowning of a new Miss Burlesque New Zealand, unfortunately I couldn't attend as I had a gorgeous wedding to attend. Though on arriving home late Saturday night I was stoked to here that local Glamilton friend Miss Bettsy Rose Lee had taken the 2011 crown! Well done darling!

Be Pin Up Perfect get the perfect eyebrow – part 1 SHAPING

Eyebrows are a must ladies...

Whether you are a Bettie, a Dita, Rockin chick, you have the perfect look mastered – your repertoire of pin up perfection MUST include your brows. I see lots of hot gals, looking pretty as a pin up, but sometimes the eyebrow let her down.

With beautifully shaped eyebrows with a nice arch are an important part of a polished look. Fabulous eyebrow shaping calls attention to your eyes, frames them, and makes them appear more open and enhances your look.

Here are some tips to master the shape of the brow. This is a must. I was a monthly waxer – no more, I will go to the expert once a month just to get a shape check, then I will tweeze away to my hearts content!

Tools of the trade:

Cotton pad

Toner/witch hazel to sooth the brow

Tweezers – invest in a good pair of tweezer

Brow brush or you can use a toothbrush

Eye brow wax or hairspray

Ok, start slowly, get a plan in place, use your makeup brushes to get a sense of the lines an where they are on your own eye to eyebrow, pluck one or two hairs at a time, go from one brow to the other to keep things even.

Just start out plucking a few hairs a day, as hasty plucking can leave you with that ‘surprised’ look for a few weeks!

Remember – the easiest mistake to make is to over pluck! Start slowly but surely.
Eyebrows should have an arch, however this doesn’t often happen naturally.
A -The perfect brow starts on the inside corner of your eye (the tear duct area) Hold a pencil or your brush vertically against the side of your nose, notice where it meets your brow – this is where the brow begins.
B - In a ideal perfect “pin up world” the arch happens over the iris, the colored part of your eye. It should be gentle. Hold a pencil or brush against your nostril and move it diagonally out across your iris – this is the best place for the arch tweeze a few hairs at a time from A to B tapering the line slightly thinner toward the peak of the arch – this will start to create a great shape for your brow.

C - they finish at the outside corner, above your eyelashes. With the pencil or brush against your nostril extend it across to the outer corner of your eye – this will guide you to the best place for the brow to end, if you tweeze from B to C tapering the line thinner.

Make an eyebrow plan!

As mentioned above if you are planning to re-shape your arch yourself, have good tweezers and a plan in front of you with the shape for your brows.
Tip; plucking eyebrows in the direction of growth ever, and the skin between thumb and forefinger, stretch it. ALWAYS tweeze in the same direction as the hair grows.

Toothbrush Those Brows

If you are having trouble taming those brows, here is another little trick. Take a toothbrush and spray with a little hair spray and then brush on brows. The stickiness of the hair spray will help keep them in place.

A lot of hot air!

We attended one of the highlights of my year ( being only April is pretty good), the Hamilton Nightglow!

So one week a year the hot air balloon fest comes and they grace our skys with their presence every morning in the build up to the glow. I off course love all this as it seems so whimsical and out of place.

Anyhoo, Nightglow involves them tethering up and flaring their ballons in time to a selection of music, like a little balloon troup! I off course sit there grinning like an idot, ohhing and ahhhing whilst wishing I could be up there too,.. maybe next year!

This year the Scroungers Car Club celebrate the 10th Anniversary of The Hot Rod Blow Out on March 27th at Rosebank Speedway on the North Western Motorway.

The event celebrates New Zealand's rich history of hot rodding, drag racing and land speed racing as well as the pioneers or individuals who truly made their mark. Among the honorees are Garth & Ron Hogan, Grahame Berry & Dave Chung, Gary Martin & Andrew Rea, Chris & Lincoln Harris, John Reid, Bob Rossister, Rob Campbell, Mike Gearing to name a few.

This reunion of old faces and old machines has become a must do on the hot rod calendar and has gained recognition throughout the world for the appreciation of old hot rods, dragsters, speedway cars, motorcycles. Not to mention the culture - the bands, the retro Miss Blow Out concert, the clothing and attire - its all a walk back in time.

Beach Hop New Zealand's biggest 50's & 60's nostalgia festival, celebrates the music, culture, fashion, classic cars, hot rods, motorbikes, dancing, dragsters, scooters of this golden era. Spread over 5 days, Wednesday to Sunday, there are parades, competitions, bands, dancing, fashion shows & more. Something for everyone!

Soo humid!
Technically we are now in Autumn here in New Zealand, and as a result we are experiencing crisp mornings mixed with hot and humid afternoons and evenings. With this excuse in hand my eye is still drawn to darling rompers and dresses but I can now look at layering these with cute cardigans and jackets.

I wanted to share my new snood with you...my gorgeous friend Collette made it for me - I wish i was that clever!
I love snoods because they can be dressed up or down. Today we were off to a local car show, the skies were a bit grey and i wanted to bust out some colour.
Snoods are good if you need a stronger hair net to sleep in - following a set.
Snoods are your friend if you are having a bad hair day!
Snoods are so versatile - wear with jeans or your favourite frock...

So you need:

A rat tail comb
Pins
Spray
and your snood

I like to have a deep parting - and because I have bangs (fringe) I like to have a roll slightly off centre to give the look a bit of shape, you can have it with or without a roll. Secure the top of the snood with a bobby pin, you might need a hand from someone to hold into place.

Sit the snood slightly behind your ears and pile the hair in, secure the top with a bobby pin or 2, smooth out the hair inside the snood get the shape you want.

I like to really smooth the hair down with some spray and a bobby pin behind the ear.
Take a flower or cute hair slide and secure to the side of the hair..my flower is from Miss La Belles House of Pretties!
